Waggel Pet Insurance Pros and Cons (2026)

Waggel may suit owners who want lifetime cover they can adjust, an optional 20% co-payment and a fully online service. The main catches are a 14-day wait for both accident and illness cover, a £1,000 yearly dental limit, no telephone or postal claims route and no multi-pet discount. For UK shoppers, the key question is whether Waggel's adjustable lifetime cover outweighs the service and claims restrictions that come with it.

An owner insuring an older pet may like choosing when the co-payment begins. Someone switching insurers may be more concerned about the wait before cover starts, while a household with several pets will need to price each policy without a group discount. The £15,000 top benefit is substantial, though a few rivals go higher.

At a glance

Cover can be adjusted. Choose a yearly benefit from £1,000 to £15,000 and an excess from £0 to £500 for each condition in each policy year. You can change both during the first seven days after buying. During the month before renewal, you can change the excess and move the yearly benefit only one level up or down. They stay fixed at other times.

It is lifetime insurance. The annual benefit resets when the policy renews. An ongoing eligible condition can remain covered across policy years as long as you renew continuously, although the renewal price can change.

The service is digital. Quotes, claims and contact with a Customer Champion run through the app or website. Waggel does not provide a call-centre route for these services or postal claim forms.

Cover starts after 14 days. That wait applies to accidents as well as illnesses. It is longer for accidents than the waits used by the other insurers in this comparison.

Some limits and discounts are less competitive. Dental treatment is capped at £1,000 a year, there is no multi-pet discount, and Waggel's £15,000 maximum annual benefit sits below the highest limits available from some rivals.

How much annual cover can you choose?

Waggel's annual benefit starts at £1,000 and tops out at £15,000. Napo offers up to £16,000, while Agria and ManyPets go up to £20,000. Animal Friends has the broadest mix of cover structures in this group. Owners looking for the highest available yearly figure will find larger limits elsewhere, but the figures do not all sit within the same type of policy.

There is no maximum joining age at Waggel. Most of the other insurers here also accept new pets without an upper age limit, so this is useful rather than unusual.

The first premium is not a promise of what later years will cost. Waggel can change its renewal price because of the pet's age, inflation and claim history. Those factors can affect renewal prices at other insurers too.

More control over the 20% co-payment

Waggel's 20% co-payment is optional, and you choose the age at which it starts. This gives owners of older pets a way to decide whether to take on a percentage of future claims in return for the quoted premium.

Several rivals bring in a co-payment automatically as a pet gets older. ManyPets does so at the first renewal after age seven. For dogs, Animal Friends and Sainsbury's Money start from age eight, while Napo starts at nine. Petplan starts at age ten for most pets, but it may begin at seven for specified dog breeds. Any Petplan breed category that applies appears on the Certificate of Insurance.

Dental cover stops at £1,000

Waggel includes yearly allowances of £1,000 for dental treatment, £1,000 for complementary treatment and £1,000 for behavioural treatment. These are parts of the main annual benefit, not extra sums added on top. A claim from one of these allowances therefore reduces what remains in the main benefit for that policy year.

Dental cover also comes with timing rules. Your pet must have had a dental examination in the previous 12 months, and any dental work recommended by the vet must be completed within three months. None of the other dental deadlines checked is as short as three months.

Owners who want dental illness covered without a separate £1,000 ceiling have other options. ManyPets Standard and Complete include dental illness and injury without a distinct dental sub-limit. Petplan includes dental illness within its full yearly benefit rather than setting a separate dental cap.

Online help and extras

Every Waggel policy includes unlimited video vet consultations through Joii at no extra charge. It also includes unlimited behaviour and nutrition consultations through Companion Animal Wellness. Each policy comes with a dedicated Customer Champion who is a qualified veterinary nurse. These consultations are support services, separate from the insured £1,000 behavioural-treatment allowance.

Dog policies include Biscuit Plus at no extra charge, with perks valued at up to approximately £150 a year. That is a maximum estimated value, not a guaranteed saving. Dog cover also includes up to £2 million of liability protection each year, subject to the policy conditions. A £250 excess applies to a liability claim involving property damage.

All of this is managed online. That will be convenient for owners who are comfortable using an app or website. It will not suit someone who wants to discuss these services by phone or send a claim form through the post.

The wait before cover begins

Waggel makes new customers wait 14 days for accident and illness cover. Every rival covered here starts accident cover on day one or after a shorter wait of 24 hours to three days, making Waggel's accident wait the longest in the group.

Waggel's policy wording and FAQ do not state that this wait can be waived when you switch from another insurer. ManyPets, Napo and Sainsbury's Money may remove their initial wait for qualifying customers who move over with uninterrupted cover.

Waggel also offers no multi-pet discount. ManyPets advertises a reduction of up to 15%, although a stated discount does not guarantee a lower combined quote for a particular household.

Medical history is reviewed at claim time

Waggel does not ask you to complete a medical questionnaire when buying a policy. It reviews your pet's medical history when you claim instead. Most other insurers do the same.

Pre-existing conditions are excluded, as they usually are in pet insurance. Buying without a medical questionnaire does not mean earlier symptoms or conditions will be covered later.

Who is Waggel likely to suit?

Waggel is better suited to an owner who wants adjustable lifetime cover, control over when a 20% co-payment starts and online veterinary support. An owner who needs accident cover sooner, wants phone or post service, has several pets to insure or needs dental cover above £1,000 is more likely to prefer another policy.
